From one of the many Irving Layton obituaries: "defying authority and ridiculing cant." Then from an article in today's New York Times about photography collections: "private collectors with the time, resources and incentive to pursue their passions can affect decisions that were once made solely by curators pursuing the overall needs of their museums."
