Howdy!
According to The Art Newspaper, the Whitney Museum is going to be buying a small painting of Karel Funk's for $40,000. Nice work, dontcha think? What I find most interesting is that Mr. Funk has only exhibited in Canada once (six years ago). And as a consequence, he has only been written about in the magazine Border Crossings (again, a long time ago). You'd figure that Canadian Art Publications would be on top of this sorta stuff, wouldn't you? If you want to read more, try this nice write up by Roberta Smith in the New York Times, or this more ambiguous review by Nick Stillman from the Brooklyn Rail. And then while I'm at it there's another Canadian artist at the 303 Gallery who hasn't gotten any press on this side of the border. Why hasn't anyone written about Tim Gardiner?
