Howdy!
Over on the other side of the Atlantic, they had a meeting of some pretty fancy folk. The meeting was about arts funding, and according to this article in the Guardian the fancy folk ('including Sir Nicholas Serota and Nicholas Hytner') came up with these specific goals: By 2015, they want 85% of the population to attend or take part in a cultural event, and every child to visit a museum or attend an arts event at least once a year.
I especially like the kids in the museum bit. However, because the definition of a museum is so darn lax, it appears that we've already attained that goal. (In Quebec there are 1,377,880 children according to the 2001 census. And according to the Quebec Government [pdf alert] there were 1,055,040 students who visited museums in Quebec last year, close enough for me.)
What I'd like to see, is this, The museums in Quebec limited to the following institutions: Musée des beaux arts, Musée d'art contemporain, Canadian Centre for Architecture, Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, and that Shawinigan space (or in other words you gotta have at least 100,000 square feet in order to be a museum). And they require one visit a year from everyone under the age of 24 (to include the University and CEGEP students) or if they want to expand it to other museums (still big, but not only the art places) then two visits per year.
